I bought this book with the understanding that the story was about a recently discovered wizard. It was not, this book is mostly about the investigation that the police play in trying to find the group that attempted to murder him. It honestly felt like this book was a spin off of a preexisting series. I didn't like it, I was really excited about the development of the main character, it never happened. I was thoroughly bored for about 80% of this book.It's not badly written, it's just not for me.Product details

I have to admit to being a little disappointed in this novel. You actually spend the least amount of time from the protagonists point of view, and more around a random police detective and his wizard consultant. The nominal main character actually ends up feeling rather superfluous. Beyond that he's also fairly unlikable. This is a character in a fantastic world with fantastic dangers literally aimed at him nigh constantly and his only reaction to gaining a defense from it is to say it bores him and he would much rather be fixing motorcycles. He learns he's potentially the most powerful wizard ever, in a society that literally revolves around them up to and including national sports and he says he has no interest in magic. Oh and also he's somehow Jackie Chan on steroids and apparently feels no fear after multiple attempts on his life. I can only hope the story picks up in the later books because as of now, I'm actually kinda pissed I bought this.
So to make a short review, the book itself claims to be about a boy who would be a wizard in a world where only females can work magic. Not a bad setup, and from what little I read of the actual magic system it seemed interesting enough. Unfortunately, if I had to guestimate, we spend maybe 5-10% of the book on the actual MC. The rest of the story follows a pair, wizard-detective, on a journey to solving a mystery-murder plot.
I had to give it two stars as I am upset that I would purchase a book after reading a promising sample that setup an interesting plot only have the story shift to a detective style book with magic. If you advertise one book, don't write another and hide it behind this.
On the off hand, the mystery itself was interesting enough but I wasn't looking for that when I bought this. If you do like those, however, you might find this an enjoyable read. Only, you'd have to continue in the series to find out how this mystery solves itself.
Given that the plot and basic setting are, for those already generally familiar with the genre, rather bland and predictable, it certainly does not help things that the characters, teenagers and adults alike, display the judgement, maturity and emotional range of young children.
Not for adult readers.
The main character is the standard male moron so popular among modern writers but in addition to his stupidity a bit of selfishness has been thrown in. Theoretically this has been done to make character development easier but when the main character shows contempt for his gift the reader is left to look elsewhere for satisfaction. Fortunately the supporting characters in Detective Lin and the mage/wizard/witch Terra Pane are enjoyable enough to tolerate the stupidity of the main character.
Unfortunately there wasn't enough development in the beginning of the second book for me to stay interested. I deleted it from my and will stop buying the series. The first book was well-written enough to not be a waste of money but unless you are a writer looking for plot ideas I recommend stopping at that one.
I liked the story but as other readers pointed out, this was mostly a police investigation by a regular police guy and a magic researcher as they try to find out who has it in for Conryu. While I found that actually interesting enough to keep reading, others may find it off putting since it doesn't match what you expect going in. The good news is book 2 is mostly all about Conryu going to school, so people wanting the kid goes to school story will get their wish.
The biggest issue with this and the next book is that it is written like a serial, not a book. That is, the story cuts off at a convenient lull without having a conclusion. Neither book has its own story arc to drive conflict/resolution so aside from interesting things that happen, there's not a lot of tension driving the plot along beyond the vague 'bad stuff being set up'. There's also a slight hint that there might be a romance between the two investigators, but no tension driving that either. Same for the boy and his friend who is a girl.
The characters are also pretty one dimensional. The boy is a nice kid, helps others, never lashes out or does something wrong, and doesn't want his newfound power, is awesome at martial arts, and has his life all planned even if he has to spend some time learning magic to satisfy a law. *yawn* It's sad when the villains are more entertaining than the heroes.
The world building is pretty weak - we have no clue why males are tested for magic even though it's 'impossible' for them to be wizards. We have no clue why a non magical guy is in charge of the department of magic. I theorized to one reviewer that it was probably because this was an administration job that a magic user would be wasted on but I honestly feel it's a bit naïve to think that women wouldn't dominate more if they were the only ones with magic. (Think the women in Wheel of Time.) We also aren't clued into why there is a law requiring schooling for the magically inclined if they can't suddenly spout magic. Also, there's a bit of magic tossed in with the tech but we don't really get a true picture of just how integrated magic is in the world. Well, you get the picture... not much was really explained about this world.
Despite all the flaws I did enjoy the story. Enough went on despite the lack of a book story arc that I was happy turning pages and reading more about what happens. While disappointed at the more serial nature of the 'book', I will read the rest of the series.
It was fairly well written and edited... no glaring errors. I read the book fairly quickly but did not find myself drawn into it. The main character is only present for about 20% of the book... I liked Conryu just not enough of him. The rest of the story moved the plot along but it felt more like the early chapters rather then the whole book. Just my opinion or impression... don't know if I will get the next book.
